Top Tips for Making Balanced School Lunches

With September approaching and kids heading back to school it’s time to start thinking about school lunches again. If you’re feeling stuck or lacking inspiration our dietitian’s got you covered!

Here are some tips to keep your kids fueled throughout their school day:

  • Involve Your Kids: Involving kids in meal planning and preparation is key to teaching healthy eating habits and important life skills. When kids help with choosing and preparing their lunches it increases the odds that they will actually eat and enjoy their food.

  • Plan & Prep Ahead: Take a few minutes before you go food shopping to list out the week’s lunches. Don’t forget to consider your family schedule. Think about whether items can easily be prepared in the morning. If not, involve the family in washing, chopping or packing the night before to make mornings easier.

  • Incorporate a Variety of Food Groups: A balanced lunch includes protein foods, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Be considerate of including a variety of foods from each group. While it’s important to focus on nutritious foods, occasional fun foods can make lunches more enjoyable and teach kids about balanced nutrition.
