Flu Cases Are Rising: Why Vaccination Matters More Than Ever

There is a concerning rise in flu (Influenza) cases, particularly amongst children, with a significant increase in children coming to the Emergency Department at CHEO. Influenza spreads very easily, is more than a “bad cold”, and children under the age of 5 are at higher risk for severe illness.

Vaccination against the influenza virus reduces the risk of hospitalization and protects individuals, families, and communities. Most children coming to the emergency department have not received the vaccination yet. Unvaccinated children are at a higher risk for severe flu-related complications, including death. There is still time to get the vaccine before the holiday season, with flu levels expected to peak at the end of December. The vaccine is available free of cost for those over the age of 6 months, is safe, and is the best defense against Influenza.

There are various options for receiving the vaccine

  • Riverside Court Medical Clinic (when an appointment is booked)

Let's work together to keep ourselves, our families, and our communities safe through vaccination and simple preventative steps such as hand washing, staying home when unwell, and wearing a mask when symptomatic. When everyone who is able to receives vaccines, this protects those who are at highest risk and who may be unable to get vaccinated (e.g. infants <6 months). Not all respiratory illnesses require a visit to the emergency department. Many mild symptoms can be safely managed at home. For those who have symptoms and are at high risk (e.g. young children, older adults, pregnant people, people with health conditions), we are available for urgent appointments, please call to book.
